Extending Your Stay

The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) allows digital nomads to stay in Thailand for up to 180 days per entry, over a 5-year multiple-entry period. If you’d like to stay longer, you have two options: apply for a 180-day extension in Thailand, or do a border run to reset your stay.

Option 1: 180-Day Extension within Thailand

Eligibility: DTV holders who have reached the end of their 180-day stay and wish to extend without leaving the country.

Procedure:

  1. Visit the Immigration Office:
Proceed to the Immigration Headquarters in Bangkok or the local immigration office corresponding to your residence.

  2. Required Documents:

    • Passport: Ensure your passport is valid and has the current DTV stamp.
    • TM.7 Application Form: This is the official form for visa extension applications.
    • Recent Passport-Sized Photographs: Typically, two photos are required.
    • Financial Evidence: Proof of financial stability, such as bank statements showing a balance of no less than 500,000 THB, sponsorship letters, or recent payslips.
    • Supporting Documents:
      • For Remote Workers/Freelancers: Employment contract, certificate of employment, or a professional portfolio.
      • For Thai Soft Power Activities Participants: Proof of enrollment or confirmation from the relevant Thai institution.
  3. Extension Fee:
Pay the extension fee of 1,900 THB.

  4. Processing Time:
The extension is typically processed on the same day, but it’s advisable to arrive early to accommodate any unforeseen delays.

Considerations:

  • Document Requirements:
Some immigration offices may require all supporting documents to be in English and up-to-date. It’s recommended to contact the specific immigration office beforehand to confirm their requirements.

  • Approval Discretion:
Extensions are subject to the discretion of the immigration officer. Ensure all documents are complete and accurate to facilitate approval.

Option 2: Border Run

Eligibility: DTV holders seeking to reset their 180-day stay by exiting and re-entering Thailand.

Procedure:

  1. Exit Thailand:
Travel to a neighboring country by land or air.

  2. Re-Enter Thailand:
Upon re-entry, present your valid DTV visa to the immigration officer. You will receive a new 180-day stamp.

Considerations:

  • No Additional Paperwork:
A border run typically doesn’t require additional documentation beyond your passport and DTV visa.

  • Frequency:
There is no official limit to the number of times you can perform a border run; however, frequent exits and re-entries may attract scrutiny from immigration officials.

  • Planning:
Ensure you are aware of the entry requirements of the neighboring country you plan to visit, even if it’s for a short duration.

Which Option Is Best?

For most people, doing a border run is the easiest choice. It’s faster, cheaper, and gives you a great excuse to explore a nearby country. ✈️ Take a quick vacation — enjoy life!
